Somba K'e Civic Plaza is beautiful outdoor area located in downtown Yellowknife in front of City Hall on 49 Avenue. Grounds are well maintained and include full grass lawns with cobblestone pathways and a tiered ampitheartre overlooking Frame Lake. Typical events held at the Somba K'e Civic Plaza are:

  • Community BBQ
  • Canada Day celebrations
  • Indigenous People's Day celebrations
  • Yellowknife Farmers Market
  • Folk on the Rocks musical performances
  • Private functions and events

Washroom building

The Somba K’e washroom building has 2 washrooms available in a warm, clean environment. Washrooms are open M-F from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
  4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and S-S 12:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Rental Rules and Guidelines

Please adhere to the following six rules when hosting or participating in events at the Somba K'e Civic Plaza.

  • Unless special approval is granted, vehicles are not permitted in the Civic Plaza.
  • Location of barbeques must be approved by the Community Services Department.
  • A mat to catch grease must be placed under all barbeques to protect the ground.
  • Rental of the amphitheatre does not include access to the washroom building.  This must be rented separately. 
  • Rental of the amphitheatre includes use of the lawns.
  • Renters must provide a list of any vendors participating in their event to the Community Services Department to ensure that they have a business license.
